WOW: Psychedelic Waves

Hues of strawberry, orange creamsicle and lavender swirl against varying shades of silver and grey to create a psychedelic glass over the open ocean.

I drop the longboard from under my right arm so that it floats beneath my fingertips as I wade out into the water.

Large seabirds fly through the sky, and a dolphin’s silhouette jumps about 200 yards out towards the sunset.

A couple dorsal fins surface and then another dolphin flips up out of the water and glides back in. I hop on my board and race out towards them.

Ever since I was young, I’ve dreamed of swimming with dolphins in the open ocean. I get about a pool’s length away, and they head out towards the horizon.

I take a deep inhale and let it out.

I catch a wave, paddle back out and sit with my husband Dave as we wait for the next set to roll in. We dance together for a while, catching waves, riding them and paddling out again.

As the sun nears the horizon, I hear the pulse of drumming begin. On the beach in front of where we are surfing, the drum circle finds its rhythm.

Wow.

Those bright pink, purple and orange pastels on the varying tones silver light. The dancing dolphins on the horizon. The drumming. I look over at my husband.

This is Valentine’s Day, a day I’ve historically not been big on celebrating. Today, we didn’t do anything but choose to go surfing.

So many feelings and sensations racing through my mind and heart reading, and picturing, expressions of love on Valentines day. We can get close to some… but never quite be get there. And then we have the beautiful realization we never needed to “get there.” Expressions of love can be so meaningful when expectations are not involved.
This, of course, really massaged my heart:

Please have the record reflect that at 44 years of age I openly celebrated Valentine’s Day. All it took was the magic of Baja Sur embraced by a gentle south swell , a pod of dolphins, and the most beautiful woman I’ve ever known.
